Lawrence O’Neal “Popneal” Akins Sr., 81, of Jasper, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Walker Baptist Medical Center.

Family will be receiving friends on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 10 until 11 a.m., at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Service will follow at 11 a.m., in the Kilgore-Green Chapel, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mark Lockhart will officiate.

Neal was a downtown business man, 3 term Walker County Road Commissioner and retired from Alabama State Department of Agriculture. He was a loving and devoted father and Popneal. Neal was an avid golfer and teacher.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Lou Akins; parents, Bill and Dutch Akins, brothers, Coleman Akins and Doug Akins; sister, Evelyn Jones.

He is survived by his children, Cherrie Lockhart (Mark) and Neal Akins Jr.; grandchildren, Kristin Colburn (Darin), Bart Lockhart (Amy), Buddy Akins (Tabatha) and Allison Lockhart; great grandchildren, Hayden, Evan, Eva, Brantley, Bryant, Annslee, Rylan and Rhett; sisters-in-law, Regina Akins and Marie Akins; his devoted friend and chosen brother, Charles Bishop; caretaker and loving friend, Shelly Hunter and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Walker Area Community Foundation or to an individual in need.
