He joined the First National Bank in 1955, and was elected its president in 1959, becoming CEO in 1967, a position he held for over 40 years. In 1985, he and a group of talented bankers started First Commercial Bank in Birmingham and he served as CEO of First Commercial Bankshares, Inc. In subsequent years, additional banks were opened in Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville. In 1992, First Commercial Bankshares merged with Synovus Financial Corporation. This space has become a great source of community pride and enjoyment, showcasing art exhibits, musical performances, craft and historical displays which is visited by school children, church groups, and other guests, at no charge.
John had a great sense of humor, a quick wit, and a gift for storytelling. As his children moved away, he maintained communication with all five through a weekly newsletter which he continued for decades. He was an avid runner for more than 40 years.
During their many travels, he and Barbara fell in love with Ireland. John found a property on the Southwest coast with a spectacular view. On this spot, they built Rossbrin Cottage where they welcomed children and grandchildren for 25 years of vacations and tours around the Irish countryside, visiting local friends, and making unforgettable memories. He loved his family, his work, his community, the state of Alabama, and spent his life trying to make a difference.
