As the sun set on the life of Joel LaFayette Martin, he was surrounded by love and devotion of his family. Born the second child of James and Stella Martin of Burnwell, on July 15, 1944, he was a lifetime resident of Walker County Alabama. Joel made his early career as a proud coal miner, later in life he focused on a menagerie of businesses such as timber and land acquisitions, to name a few. A contagious collector and an avid reader, he educated himself and became expertly knowledgeable in cast iron, American coins and firearms.
Family will be receiving friends on Monday, June 17, 2024, from 1until 3 p.m., at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Service will follow at 3 p.m., in the Kilgore-Green Chapel, with burial at Shanghai Cemetery of Quinton.
Joel leaves behind three loving devoted daughters in which he is extremely proud of, the Honorable Circuit Judge, Joeletta Martin Barrentine ( husband Jeremy), Johnna Jane Johnson (husband Alan) and Julie Ann Bray; his beloved grandchildren; Jolie Bray, Julian Bray, Lillie Bray, Luke Bray, Jase Barrentine and Will Johnson; great granddaughter, Ellie Jane Bray; mother of his children, Joan Thornton; sister, Patricia Ann Bowers; niece, Lisa Ann Bowers (Bobby Baker) and a host of special friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his father, James Martin and mother, Stella Martin.
