James Lindenburg Townsend “Jim”, 94, of Jasper, died peacefully Friday, December 10, 2021, surrounded by his family at home. Family will be receiving friends Wednesday, December 15, 2021, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery. Alan Beasley will officiate.
Jim was born on June 7, 1927, to the late Arlie and Beechum Townsend. He was the oldest of 5 children. He met his beloved wife Dean at Vina High School and married her at age 20. They would spend the next 72 years together, leaving their family a beautiful picture of love and commitment. At age 17 he enlisted in the US Navy. He proudly served his country in World War II and the Korean War. Following his service he began a career in sales with George A Hormel and Co., which would span his entire career. Upon retirement he followed his passion for golf, playing and working at Musgrove Country Club forming lasting friendships and mentoring many young men. He was a member of Midfield Methodist Church and served there faithfully until their move to Jasper in 1984. After moving to Jasper, he became a member of Jasper First United Methodist Church. He held a special place in his heart for the Trinity Sunday School Class and the Celebration Service. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. His Saturday afternoons in the fall were spent cheering on his Auburn Tigers. His love of nature and the outdoors was evidenced by his beautiful yard and the passion he had for gardening. Nothing surpassed his love for Christ and his family. His love was unconditional and he enjoyed being involved in all aspects of the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Willodean Neely Townsend; parents, Arlie Lee Townsend and Beechum Weatherbee Townsend; siblings, Nancy Smith, JoAnn McKinney, and Billie Townsend.
He is survived by his children, Lynne Rodgers (Rick), Tamara Matthews (Joe), and Terri Walls (David); grandchildren, Patrick Whittington, Lindsay Whittington (Josh), Amy Dill (Nick), Darcy Mosley (Taylor), Christian Matthews (Cadie), Eli Matthews, Katie Stripling (Brad), and Allie McDuff (Brian); sister, Betty Wells; great grandchildren, Hallie Lindsay, Jackson Daniel, Joshua Daniel, Carrly Dill, Wyatt Dill, Mack Dill, Oliver Mosley, Amelia Mosley, Abe Mosley, Neely Stripling, Bennett Stripling, Tucker McDuff, Max McDuff, Miller McDuff, and Hadleigh Matthews.
His Family wishes to extend their sincere and heartfelt thanks to caregivers Mona Browder, Andrea Varnell, James Windham and Comfort Care Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Jasper First United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be Christian Matthews, Eli Matthews, Patrick Whittington, Nick Dill, Taylor Mosley, Brad Stripling, Brian McDuff and Josh Bethea.
