So sorry to learn of Bruce’s passing.💕
Bruce was the “best of the very best” and was a huge positive influence on many lives, especially mine!

I was so sad to see my friend Bruce Windham had passed away.  I was a young legislator, and my first term was in 1986.  I did not know anyone in Montgomery and not a lot about the process.  I think his brother James, who lived in Columbiana, asked him to come by and check on me.   From the first minute we met, we became great friends.  He would stop by my office every time he came to Montgomery, just to see how I was doing.  He told me up front, do not feel uncomfortable with any question I might have on legislation or the process.  I have missed him since his retirement and certainly concerned after his illness.  I truly thank him for being my friend and always being there for me.  Mike Hill

One of the first memories that comes to mind when I think of Uncle Bruce is when I was 4-5 years old. Spending the night with Maw Maw and Paw Paw had the added benefit of spending time with Bruce. He was in high school then, maybe 16-17 years old.  In the morning he liked to sleep in so getting him out of bed required Maw Maw coming into his room, swinging a broom, saying, “Earl Bruce, get out of bed.”  I remember him strumming his guitar on his bed and singing to the Beatles records playing on his record player.

Sunday trips to church in Nauvoo were the best because of his red Impala. Sitting in that bucket seat up front, with the windows rolled down… and he always had cinnamon Certs. Those trips hold a special place in my heart… and when I see a red Impala or taste a Certs, I think of him.

I remember the anticipation of Saturdays in late October when all the boys would go down to woods along Black Water to hunt squirrels... bird hunting in the field at the bottom of the hill—those crisp early October mornings spent with them in the woods, listening to nature and learning from that generation of men—shaped me in ways I still cherish.

When he went off to college, and later as a college graduate when he started working at Drummond, I remember missing him.  I remember getting dressed to go to his and Shelia’s wedding.  And later visiting them in the mobile home, their first home together.  

As an adult he was not just an uncle but also a role model, someone whom I looked up to because he created new possibilities in my mind. From his family’s beginning in the coal mines and fields, he blazed a new path that made me believe in my abilities.

Shelia, I was so sorry to hear this news.  I’m sure you have been an excellent caregiver for Bruce and he will be missed by many friends. Please give my sympathies to the children and grands. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.
