Barbara was also known as “Barb and Bobbie”; she was born December 12, 1958 to James P. and Barbara Gillmore in Kaiserslautern, Germany, an American Military Base. Barb was 65 years old when she passed at home on September 11, 2024, after a short illness. She attended Clark County High School and graduated. She graduated Huntington College with a degree in Physiology and Sociology. She went on to Herzing Institute in Birmingham and finished with a certificate in computer Technology. She worked at Marshal Durbin and went on to work for Nelson Brothers where she retired. In her younger years Barb was mischievous, she loved to dance, sneak out of the house, eat homemade ice cream, play board games, hang out at the dairy bar, go exploring in the woods, hang out with friends, rescue animals and bugs. She loved rescuing animals, doing zig saw puzzles, loved being Santa at Christmas, loved Alabama football, loved being with family, loved road trips, her fish in the pond, fireworks, home, butter flies, birds, BBQ cookouts and New Year Eve. She loved decorating the property for Halloween and Christmas. She loved pretty yard ornaments. Barb loved flowers and planted many flowers and shrubs around the house and in the yard. Barb could never have too many plants, scrubs and flowers. Barb took in many many less fortunate animals that others had thrown away. Barb had a huge heart and helped other people even a pair of worn out flip-flops. She loved the outdoors and feeding wild animals, she loved to ride Callie “her gator” to the back of the property and be surrounded by Gods glory while feeding the fish, turtles and wild geese. She loved taking the children on Callie to the top of the hill and go exploring. She loved her snapping turtle that a friend rescued and brought to her and named it Bama and put it in our pond. Anything alive she had a passion for even snakes, spiders, red wasp, foxes and armadillos. Barb was a happy go lucky person and loved all things that God created, especially the deers. Barbara loved Bebo and all of Bebo’s family especially the children of Bebo’s sister, Belinda Davis Stephens, Bebo’s brother and Bebo’s nieces and nephew. Barbara loved her sister Katherine McConnell and Katherine’s children and her great nieces and nephews. She loved our neighborhood and especially our neighbors Mrs. Geradine Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Kirkpatrick’s family. Tim Phillips and all of his family including Ralph and Linda Smith and her family. All this and more is Barbars C. Gillmore AKA Bobbie and Barb.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. James Pugh Gillmore; brother, James Cliffton Gillmore; grandmother, Julia Pugh Gillmore, grandfather, Cliffton Breece Gillmore; grandfather, Harry White and grandmother, Grace White.
She was survived by a life time best friend and partner of 44 years, Rita Jane Davis; mother, Barbara Rainey Gillmore; sisters, Cheryl Ann Gillmore and Katherine Gillmore McConnell; numerous niece and nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Barb did not have any children. Her pets were and are her children. Their names are Saydee Jane, Oni, Thomas, Rye, Gypsi, ABC Bonkens, Mr. Gibbs, Fanny, Yogi, Zeva, Bama the turtle, all the catfish had names but I won’t try to list them, Hansel and Gretel the geese and Maybell the doe.
A special thanks to Kyle Phillips who gave Barb, Bama the Snapping turtle. Barbara wants everyone to know when “feathers appear, angels are near.”
Pallbearers will be Tim Phillips, James Dewitt, John Stephens, Michael Stephens, Anthony Stephens, Jason Stephens, Michael McConnell and James McConnell.
Flowers are very welcome, because Barb loved flowers and loved being given flowers but donations to local animal rescue facilities (no kill preferred facilities, public and private or individual run facilities will also very welcomed as Barb also loved animals. Flowers and animals is Barbs passion and legacy you can call Robin Jackson at 205-901-9019 for referrals for animal rescue centers.
