My condolences to the family and friends of Sgt Mjr Jim Butler.  I recall when, as PFC's, we were stationed on Okinawa, then went on to Viet Nam together.  Fun times... Semper Fi!

You were a great mentor.  I learned so much as a young Staff Sergeant and then Gunny working with you to improve our staff club.  The magnificent large bald eagle/Marine Corps Emblem art work you and all the other Sgt's Major signed at my going away party hangs at the entrance way to my home in VA. We struck up a bond as brothers with the same corps values  Taking care of our Marines, even if they were not in our unit.  Jim has a positive impact on all Marines that crossed his path. Our Sympathies to the Family of Jim Butler.  I served with Jim as a recruit in Platoon 296 at P.I.  Forty some years later Jim contacted me and told me about "Together We Served" and that he was looking for other 296 members.  We talked on the phone and by email and I felt like I had found a lost Brother!   My wife and I attended the 50 year Reunion that Jim organized and it was Great!  I just talked to Jim a couple of weeks ago, so I was shocked by his death.  Jim is a Great man and Marine and I will miss him.  Wish we could attend his service, but we will be there in spirit! To SgtMaj Jim Butler.  Thank you for your service, and your friendship.  You were an inspiration to thousands of Marines throughout your career, and a great friend to the community.  I know that security has improved greatly on Heavens scenes and that you are surrounded by Peggy and all those who have reported to Sky 6 before you.  What a great way to spend eternity.  Rest well my friend.

My sincerest condolences to the family of SgtMaj Butler. I had the privilege of serving with him while I was a Sgt when he pulled his 'air wing' duty in HMM-162. I always enjoyed flying with him while he was earning his aircrew wings as he did it the right way and expected no special treatment due to his rank. 
He took great care of his Marines and I will always remember him as one of the best SgtsMaj that I served with.  He continued to look out for his Marines while working for MFCU as well. 
He was a trusted confidant and mentor who will be sorely missed.

I had the honor of serving with Sgt Major Butler when he was SgtMaj of HMM-162. He was by far the best Squadron SgtMaj I served under! Semper Fi!

To the Butler Family:  We are totally shocked to hear of SgtMaj Butler's passing.  He was in my recruit Platoon 296, of which I was the Sr. Drill Instructor.  He organized a 50-year reunion for the platoon last year and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him as fellow retired SgtMaj--instead of a recruit!   He will be sorely missed.  He was a great Marine and a good friend.  Good bye my friend until we meet again on the streets.

The Buffalo Family sends condolences and sympathies to the Butler Family and friends on this sad occasion. James and I served in the same recruit platoon at MCRDPI.  He'd reached out to me quite a few years ago thru TWS to reconnect with himself and the Marines who went through boot together. He sent our Plt graduation pictures to me, found others, and set up a system where all of the Plt could get and keep in touch. He was an outstanding man as well as Marine. Though we never met I will miss him greatly.

To the family, friends, and all those who served with Sgt Major Butler...my deep condolences. I served with him while on recruiting duty and his leadership and service to our Corps was a steadfast reminder of our important work. The Marine Corps makes great people...and Sgt Major Butler was a great example of that fact. I wish I had been provided the opportunity to spend a little time with him after he retired but our paths never crossed except on togetherweserved.com. May he rest in peace in heaven where the streets are guarded by United States Marines.
