He attended John Gorrie Junior High and Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville and graduated from Pineville High School in Pineville, Louisiana. Following high school, he received a football scholarship from Northwestern Louisiana State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where he was a four year letterman. After earning a degree in physical education and history at Northwestern, he joined the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During his time in the Army, he made a number of successful jumps, including one into the jungles of Panama. He also worked for the U.S. Army Security Agency. When he left the military, he got a job in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, as a teacher and high school football coach. Following that, he worked for Johns Manville in Miami, Florida and then worked for the majority of his professional career for Koger Properties, Inc. in Jacksonville.
In 1964, Bill eloped with the great love of his life, Pamela Koger of Jacksonville. They were married in a gas station in South Georgia by a notary/justice of the peace after dating for three months. Throughout his life, Bill cared deeply for his children and grandchildren, attending horse shows, football games, wrestling matches, baseball games, soccer games, and karate lessons and taking them to watch Gator football.
Bill was a member of the University Club, the Florida Yacht Club, Ponte Vedra, the Meninak Club, and the Atlantic Beach Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pamela Koger Moore; son, William J. (Chip) Moore, III (Brooks); daughter, Nancy Amanda (Mandy) Moore Meeks (Eric); sister, Patricia Coulter Johnson (Brad); stepsister, Dorothy Coulter Adams (Al); granddaughters, Brooks Woodcock Moore and Katherine Phelps Moore; grandson, Tucker Allen Meeks; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A service will be held in his honor at eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at The Oaklawn Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Jacksonville Humane Society.
