ADC William J. Meyer, went home to be with the Lord on January 1, 2012. He was born in 1947 in Vernal, Utah. Known to most as Bill Meyer, he retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after serving 22.5 years. Directly after, he became the Airfield Manager with the Department of the Navy at NAS, Jacksonville for another 22.5 years, a total of 45 years of service to his country. During his naval service, Chief Meyer was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal w/4 stars, Sea Service Ribbon w/2 stars, National Defense Service Medal, and Pistol Marksman w/”E”. Bill was awarded numerous Meritorious Civil Service awards during his tenure as Airfield Manager.
Bill was well known in the local aviation community by the handle "Flangehead". He served as the Sun N' Fun Helicopter Chairman in Lakeland, Florida for the last 25 years and was awarded the Chairman of the Board aka-laid in 1998. Bill held the grand champion title for his RotorWay Exec helicopter in 1992. Bill will be remembered as a helicopter enthusiast that changed the way people looked at experimental rotorcraft. Recently he served as the President of the Airpark in Hilliard, Florida for the last 3 years.
ADC William J. Meyer is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Bobbie Wilhite Meyer, his children Bridgett Meyer Boyarovsky & William Brian Meyer of Jacksonville Florida, Steven John Lampe of Denver, Colorado and two grandchildren Isabella & Skyler.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 8, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Town and Country Funeral Home and Riverside Memorial Park. Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 9, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at Lakeshore Baptist Church where he was a member,with Pastor Steve Mouzon officiating. Pallbearers will be Andrew Kallenbach, Rick Oreair, Roger Buis, Charles Smith, Tim Smith, and Jack Kempster. Burial services will be performed January 9, 2012 at 1:30 pm on Monday, at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contribution may be made to the family in which a memorial account has been set up for a permanent memorial to be placed at Hillard Airpark.
