Bill was a dedicated patriot who served his country with honor, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy after 23 years of distinguished service. Upon retiring from the military, Bill continued his commitment to service by becoming a devoted Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (NJROTC) Teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Garden Grove School District. He found great fulfillment in teaching students the values of patriotism, honor, service, and leadership. He was a great teacher and mentor to many students.
Bill earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sacramento State University in 1965. He was a man of strong character and principles, deeply committed to God, his wife, family, and his country. Guided by his Catholic faith, Bill was an active member of various congregations across the country and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He supported multiple charities including the Multiple Sclerosis Society in honor of his father, Tunnels to Towers Foundation, Wounded Warriors and Disabled American Veterans. His time in the Navy fostered a love for travel and an appreciation for the world. Accompanied by his beloved wife, Patricia, he explored numerous countries, predominantly by cruise ship. Among his favorite destinations were Rome, Italy, and Japan. He lived around the world but always considered himself to be a California native.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Elaine Copus. He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years Patricia, his children Thomas Copus, David Copus, and Susanne Mata, his grandchildren Carrissa Willmon, Taylor Munson, Nathan Copus, Austen Copus, Andrew Copus, and Jasen Mata, and his great grandchildren Harper Munson and Braylen Wilson.
Bill will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his faith, and his country. His legacy of service, leadership, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
