A lifetime resident of Jacksonville, Virginia was born May 28, 1928. She was named after her mother, Virginia Dascher Smith, of Valdosta, Georgia. Her father, Benjamin William Smith, was a pharmacist and owned an apothecary in Jacksonville in the 1930’s and 40’s. Virginia attended Landon High School in Jacksonville and from there attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. From Mary Baldwin she went on to become a medical technician in Jacksonville and then married William (Bill) Massey, Jr. in 1952. Virginia and Bill lived in Jacksonville ever since and raised four children together. They were married 60 years. In August of this year they would have been married 60 years. Virginia was a dedicated mother and wife. She had a wonderfully generous spirit and she never missed a chance to let the people who came into her life know how special they were to her. She loved the time she had with friends as well as meeting new people and blessing them all with her love and enthusiasm for life. Her greatest passion was for her husband, Bill, and her four children.
Virginia was pre-deceased by her husband, Bill and her daughter, Lynn Smith Massey. She is survived by her son, William W. Massey, III, daughters, Laura Ann Massey and Lisa LaSalvia, five grandchildren and one great-grand child.
Funeral services will be held at Avondale United Methodist Church on Talbot Avenue and Herschel on Tuesday, January 7, at 11:00.
