Sumi Nakama Powell

Sumi was born in Sasebo City, Japan on March 15, 1935 to parents Yosuke and Sei Nakama, both of whom had a Potato Saki Company during her childhood.

Sumi met Jerome Powell in Sasebo City while working at a grocery store during his time serving there in the United States Navy. They married and she took her job as a Navy wife seriously for 30 years. She never would go on to establish a career, but she loved her job as being a full-time housewife. Throughout their marriage they lived in various different States like California, Virginia, Florida and Washington, DC. Her hobbies included camping, fishing, (Boy Scouting), hiking, the beach, biking and gardening.

Sumi and Jerome had three children: Bobby Powell, Michael Powell and Chris Powell. They would later be blessed with three grandchildren, Phillip Powell and Christina Powell.

Her faith in God, Bible study, child rearing, motherhood and grand-motherhood were each so very important to her.

A visitation for Sumi will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225. A celebration of life will occur Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 11:00 AM with a committal service to immediately follow at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.
