August 7, 2018 was the day that we heard the word that no one wants to hear…cancer. It was devastating, but we, with the help of her doctors, devised a plan to fight it. Sheryl went through weeks of chemotherapy, radiation, PT scans, CT scans & x-rays & had the surgery to remove the tumor. She came home with a feeding tube for 5 weeks, during which she could not eat or drink anything orally. It was a very difficult task, but she did everything she was supposed to. After putting up a good fight, we got the news that the cancer had spread to various organs. It was very aggressive. She got one more round of chemotherapy after that. Her body fought & fought, but the cancer took her away from us. She passed away on July 14, 2019 at 7:40 p.m. at Community Hospice in Jacksonville, FL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents & a step daughter, Kay Harmon Laabs.
She is survived by her sisters Phyllis (Ivan) Freitag & Diane (Roger) Breitsprecher of Elkader, Iowa, a brother Paul (Barbara) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. An “adopted” family, daughter Elizabeth “Sissy”, son Doug, and granddaughter Genevieve (Gigi) Greenwood. She has two step granddaughters, Allison (Jim) and their children Rosie, Jay & Jack Hessel of Missouri and Wendy (Carlos) & their children Nicholas & Kaylyn Villa of Jacksonville, FL.
