It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Phil Rohman, a devoted U.S. Army veteran, skilled helicopter pilot, and loving father, grandfather, and friend. He died in Jacksonville, Florida on November 13, 2024 at the age of 78. Phil was a lifelong patriot whose service to his country leaves behind a legacy of courage, commitment, and compassion.
Phil was born on January 17, 1946, in Bakersfield, California and his family then relocated to Jacksonville, Florida. Following high school, he attended University of Florida before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966. After his basic training, he immediately progressed to Officer Candidate School and Flight School to become a pilot of UH-1 Huey helicopters. During his military career, Phil was assigned to various operations, serving in Vietnam from 1968-1969 and later became a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter instructor pilot at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He is well-recognized in the aviation community as a foundational author of flight standards that are in continued use today. He had an extended tour of 11 years in Germany assigned to aviation units at Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, and Seckenheim where he supported operational missions in advance of, during, and after Desert Storm. After retiring from military service in 1998, Phil continued to support the aviation community, working as a consultant for US Army aviation contractor, AEPCO.
Throughout his life, Phil embraced the opportunity to travel, meet new people, and embrace different cultures. He loved to socialize with anyone and everyone, looking for any opportunity to start a conversation and share a funny story. He was an avid RV camper, and enjoyed golf, fishing, and football.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Diane Rohman, his daughters Dana Rohman and Lea Morgan (Andy), his five grandchildren: Ashley Cruz, Kayla Cruz, Sara Winter, Hayden Colson, and Garret Winter, and his six great-grandchildren: Avy, Audrey, Rylan, Camris, Noah, and Moses. He is also survived by his brothers & sisters: Joseph (Chip) Beardsley (Ellen), Alice McGuiness, Vicky Ward (Lane), and John (Topper) Beardsley, and seven nieces and nephews. A service will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery (date and time to be confirmed and shared once available).
As a soldier, a father, and a friend, Phil touched countless lives. His legacy of bravery and dedication will endure in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in peace, knowing that his contributions to our country and his family will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Phil. You served with honor, and you will be remembered with pride.
