“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4: 7
Robert William Shryock (Bob) beloved husband, Dad, brother, colleague and friend leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication and love for all those who knew him. He was 76 years when he entered his heavenly home this leap year. He was born in Zanesville, Ohio, to parents Lou Ella and Robert M. Shryock. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years Janice Taccati Shryock and his son Craig [wife Heather and children Emily, Hayden (Steve) along with 3 great grandchildren Carter, JB, and Brooks and Maddie (Austin) ] and is survived by his second son Brent (wife Nicole; and sons Nathan and Cooper.) Bob also leaves two brothers Tom Shryock (wife Cheryl, and children Sarah (Danny) and Rebecca and Mike (Megan and children Cohen and Hadley) and brother John [Heidi (daughter Michelle) children Stacey (children Madison and Ethan) and Cynthia (son TJ). Also surviving is a sister Merri Bea Spencer (and daughter DeeDee Flagg and grandchildren.)
Joining the service as a private at 18 years old, Bob enjoyed a 20 year career in the US Army, retiring at the age of 38 as a LT COL. His early military career took him to flight school where he became a fixed wing aviator, and subsequently served 2 tours in Viet Nam, the first of which earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air medals and the Cross of Gallantry. He also served in Germany, Ft Rucker, AL, Ft Benning, New Cumberland Army Depot, PA and the Army War College, Carlisle, PA.
Bob was fortunate enough to complete his undergraduate and post graduate degrees while serving in the Army. He received a Bachelor of Aviation Management from Auburn University in 1974 and a Masters of Science in System Management in 1980. He was in the first graduating class at the University of Missouri to complete The Executive Program in Managed Care in 1988.
After his Army retirement in 1985, Bob began an over 30- year career as a Managed Care/Healthcare executive. He retired from Brooks Rehabilitation in 2018 to commence a yet fuller life which included his personal hobbies and interests as well as community service, the latter of which included 10 years on the Board of Governors at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club. More significantly, he was deeply devoted to and served Deermeadows Baptist church since 1995 serving on several committees. He also served as a DBC Deacon.
Bob was a man’s man, full of fun and life. He and his “Beauty” as he called his wife enjoyed long-distance motorcycle trips out west and in the mountains of the Blue Ridge. He played golf every week with friends or enjoyed feeble attempts to best his sons on the course, but rarely could. He loved displaying his culinary talents for friends and family. He loved his sports cars. He relished life with his grandchildren just hanging, swimming, traveling, watching their sports—GPA was the best!
Second to his passion for his family, Bob loved sailing. He always expected everyone to love it as much as he did. To him, the sight of a full sail billowing in the wind and in his face brought a sense of adventure-- and even peace. That was his Christian walk as well: it brought him a sense of adventure in serving and peace in his soul. Now for us left behind, knowing that Bob is in the presence of his Father in Heaven, this forever will bring us a full sail of peace as well.
