Lex was preceded in death by his parents, Welan Dyson and Leon Payne, and beloved daughter, Robin Brown. He is survived by his devoted sisters: Elaine Peacock, Melba Woodham, Sharon Pilcher, Judy Snowden, and Deborah Bryant. He leaves behind his son, Ryan Payne and his wife Laura, along with their daughters Alyssa, Avery, and Cameron. His daughter, Mandy Honeywell and her husband Steve survive him, along with his granddaughters Sydney Brown and Erin Brown.
Lex served his country with distinction as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. His valor and dedication were so remarkable that he was featured in Jeff Kelly's book The DMZ Diaries, as well as No Shining Armor: The Marines at War in Vietnam: An Oral History by Otto Lehrack. Throughout his life he maintained close friendships with his fellow Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines Mike Company, exemplifying camaraderie and brotherhood.
In addition to his military service, Lex worked for the civil service for 20 years, contributing to his community through his dedication and hard work.
He was a beloved son, father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Lex possessed a magnetic quality which earned him the respect and admiration of many people throughout his life. His warmth, charisma, and humor will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Wednesday, July 31st, at 12:30 pm at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please submit charitable donations to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation at www.t2t.org.
