Bob was a 5th generation Floridian, born in Jacksonville June 7, 1925, the son of L.W. Knight, D.D.S. and Emma Lee Stripling. He graduated in 1943 from Robert E. Lee High School, enlisted in the Army upon graduation, and served in the U.S. and Europe for three years during WWII, first as a demolition technician, and ultimately as a surgical tech with the 140th Evacuation Hospital in Europe.
Bob was stationed briefly at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma during WWII, which was near Muskogee, his future wife Nadine's hometown. They met when Nadine served his table at a church supper for the soldiers, and they were married when Bob returned from Europe after the war.
Bob attended Duke and Emory Universities, graduating from Emory Dental School in 1951. Bob retired from dentistry in 2000, having served as a compassionate and dedicated caregiver to his patients for 49 years. He was a member of the American and Florida Dental Associations, American College of Dentists, and past president of the Florida Academy of Dental Practice Administration. He also lectured widely during his dental career.
Bob loved traveling. He boated many wild rivers in Florida, visited all 50 states, and traveled abroad to Israel, Europe, and Canada. He later became a private pilot with Instrument and Commercial ratings with over one thousand hours logged in his own Mooney airplane and was a past member of the Quiet Birdmen. His favorite places were the Canadian Rockies, New England, and the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, especially his former mountain home near Waynesville, NC.
A graveside service for Robert will be held Wednesday, September 22, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
