Norman N. Nelms, Jr. was born on 2/11/25, died on August 24, 2012. He was the son of the late Norman N. Nelms, Sr. and Isabel Yopp Nelms of Wilmington, NC. He is survived by his loving wife Mildred (Mille) Dove Nelms after 67 years of marriage. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Jerry (Barbara), David (Jill), Norman, III (Karen) Anne Nelms, Lane (Brad), and six grandchildren: Kristina Nelms, Brooke Nelms Williamson (Lee), Taylor and Michael Nelms, Logan and Casey Lane, and one great grandchild, Finley Williamson.
He was born and raised in Wilmington, NC and graduated from New Hanover High School where he was a Lt in the ROTC. He never forgot his cherished roots in North Carolina. He delighted in telling others about his 1930’s Great Depression jobs. He was a long time member of the YMCA and enjoyed swimming and playing softball. He was an avid golfer and often bragged about his hole-in-one.
His career with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad began in Wilmington, NC and ended in 1985 in Jacksonville, FL after 42 years. He served as an Industrial Specialist involving sales and leasing of company owned property and new track construction.
He was a volunteer at Arlington Heights Elementary School for many years and was Volunteer of the year in 1990. He was a member of Arlington Presbyterian Church and served as a teacher, elder, and trustee. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Men’s Bible Study Group, Roger Johnson, Dan Groover, and Will Hewlett.
Funeral Service will be 11AM Friday August 31, 2012 at Arlington Presbyterian Church, 1351 Sprinkle Drive with interment to follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Boulevard. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Community Hospice of NE Florida, or Arlington Presbyterian Church and that those attending the service please accessorize or accent your dress with Carolina Blue in his honor.
