Nelson George Mashour

Nelson, the oldest of three children, was born to Thelma Allen Mashour and the late Nelson G. Mashour Sr. on February 1, 1947 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was married to Mary Helen Meide Mashour.

Nelson is predeceased by his father, Nelson, and sister, Pamela Mashour Brandon, and survived by his mother, Thelma (99), and his sister, Sandra Mashour Salem; his wife, Mary; his two daughters Terri Mashour (Dr. Hugh McClelland) and Susie Mashour Rawlins (Chris); and his four grandchildren - Picchu, Hamilton, Owen, and Brooks.

Nelson was born in Jacksonville, but grew up in Miami, Florida where he developed a love of nature, speech and debate, and acting. He earned a full scholarship in debate to Marist College on the Hudson River, north of New York City, where he acted in the theatre department. After one year in the cold, he returned to Miami and attended Miami Dade College and the University of Miami, where he was in the theatre department while, as he always pointed out, Sylvester Stallone attended the University. He was a life long Miami Hurricanes fan attending many of the rival Florida State vs. Miami football games.

Nelson moved to Jacksonville after college where he acted at Little Theatre Jacksonville and enjoyed the hospitality and good Syrian cooking of his grandmother, Shumsie Allen, while living with her on St. Johns Avenue in Riverside. He worked for The Youth Crisis Center in Jacksonville, helping youth runaways, and later worked in the insurance industry. He was an avid gardener and also had many orange and lemon trees in his yard. He loved golfing and attended The Players Championship for many years, and he also enjoyed judging the speech and debate team at Terry Parker High School. He enjoyed shelling at Guana and fishing while on summer vacations at Vilano Beach. He loved going to his daughters’ sporting events, keeping up with current events, tracking Florida storms brought by Mother Nature, and calling his family to step outside to see the planets align or to watch meteor showers. He was very proud of his daughters and grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Corey Kerlin Funeral Home at 940 Cesery Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida 32211 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Salaam Club Memorial Scholarship Fund at 8101 Beach Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida 32216 or The Youth Crisis Center at youthcrisiscenter.org
