Nancy Swearengen Shults passed away Thursday May 26th at the age of 78. Nancy is preceded into death by her husband, Arthur Garvin Shults, her father, James Dubose Swearengen, and her mother, Annie James Swearengen. She is survived by her brother, Morgan Swearengen of Tampa, her two sisters, Carmen Bruer of Houston, TX, and Bettye Ratliff of Memphis, TN. Nancy leaves behind her son, Arthur Van Shults (Frances) and her daughter, Laura Elise Beard (Murray) and four grandchildren, Katherine Frances Shults of Orlando, Laura Morgan Beard, Rachael Van Shults and Davis Maxwell Beard of Jacksonville.
Nancy was born in Union City, Tennessee and has been a resident of Florida for over 60 years. She graduated from Memphis State University with a degree in education and was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.
Nancy taught elementary school for several years before becoming a full time mom and wife. She is a past president of the South Jacksonville Women’s Club. In her retirement years she spent time in the mountains of North Carolina and at their lake house in Lake Como, Florida where she always made friends. Nancy loved gardening and reading, working crossword puzzles and hanging out with her friends at Curves. Nanny loved her family dearly including her beloved poodles; Mr. T and later, Punkin. She was a loving, caring person who was a friend to all.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 1st in Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, 12236 Mandarin Road, Jacksonville, FL 32223. Family visitation and reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Episcopal Church of Our Saviour – Grounds Fund or to Palms Presbyterian Church – Youth Ministries, 3410 South 3rd St., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
