March 4, 2018 at Baptist Beaches Medical Center. Mozelle was born in
Horton, Alabama on December 14,1926. She was the fourth child of Joel G.
and Savannah Buckelew. She grew up with her six siblings Caldwell, Katherine,
Volis, Tim, Avis and Don. She graduated from Douglas High School in 1946 and
went to work. She met a handsome young sailor named Lewie(Cookie),
and fell in love and married in 1950. As a Navy wife she moved with her husband to
multiple naval bases, while raising her two wonderful daughters and son.
She was an active stay at home mom until her children were in
school. Mozelle then went to work for Pic N Save Drugs as a
pharmacy clerk and worked for over twenty years. She was very
active in her church, First Baptist Church of Atlantic Beach,
teaching Sunday School, VBS,and served as the church clerk for
many years. After retirement she was busy volunteering for
Meals on Wheels and Mission
House through her church. She also enjoyed the fellowship of
her women’s church group Silver Threads, where their mission
was to keep the kitchen and nursery spotless!!
Mozelle was predeceased by her wonderful son, Fred; parents
Joel G. & Savannah Buckelew; brothers Caldwell and Tim
Buckelew; and her sisters Katherine Breedwell and Avis Jones. She
is survived by her husband of 68 years Lewie F. Self, Sr.;
daughters Darlene (Steve) Davenport and Donna (Mike) Matuszak;
her two brothers Volis and Don (Faye) Buckelew; and many
cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, officiated by Reverend Greg Crocker, will be
Thursday March 8, 2018 at 11:00am at Chapel Hills Funeral
Home & Memory Gardens, 850 St. Johns Bluff Rd. N.,
Jacksonville, Florida. The family will receive friends one hour
prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
The family wishes to thank her church family for their
continuing prayers and support. Special thanks to the nurses at
Beaches Hospital for their gentle compassionate care in her last
