Miriam was born to Juan and Eduarda Gutierrez in Manhattan, New York; where she lived until she was 15 years old and the family moved to Miami, Florida. After high school Miriam continued her education at Florida State University. This is where she met her husband-to-be, William Eugene Stokes, a Jacksonville native. They were soon wed and moved to Jacksonville, Florida where Miriam worked as an interpreter for a construction firm. Miriam and Gene had 4 children, Robby, Vicki, Dorie, Daniel. Around 1978 they moved to Arlington, Texas until Gene found his calling in Palatka, Florida. Miriam and Gene lived happily on their riverfront property for many years before moving to a retirement community. Miriam resided in the retirement community until her passing. She was a Deacon and long-time member of First Presbyterian of Palatka until her move to Jacksonville. Miriam was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, William E. Stokes and her youngest daughter, Miriam Dorine Stokes Cantrell. She is survived by 3 of her children: John Robert Stokes (Sherry), Vicki Jean Stokes, Daniel Rey Stokes (Doug), and her son-in-law Ernest Cantrell. She was also blessed with 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Miriam enjoyed several hobbies which included: reading, sailing, crocheting, knitting, and painting. She began taking piano lessons at 70 years old. Her and Gene loved to travel and by their 50th wedding anniversary they had visited all 50 states and over 40 different countries. Miriam left her earthly bonds peacefully in her sleep in the early hours on Friday, April 19, 2024. She will be missed by her family and friends and will be interred at Oak Lawn Cemetery at 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at 1:30 pm. The service will be graveside only with light refreshments after the service in the study at the cemetery.
