Maureen Nelson Gillis, 67, died Friday morning following a long battle with glioblastoma multiforme (brain cancer). A long-time resident of Jacksonville, Florida, Ms. Gillis was born on June 25, 1944, in Pineville, Kentucky. Ms. Gillis was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, whose many occupations including the breeding and raising of Great Danes and the buying and selling of antiques. Ms. Gillis is survived by her devoted husband of 39 years, Robert F. Gillis; daughter, Vickie Ducote (Charles); son, H. Timothy Gillis (Wendy); two grandsons, Collin J. Ducote and Robert F. Gillis; one granddaughter, Sophia A. Gillis; three brothers, Harold Nelson (Lettie), Billy Ray Nelson, and Tommy Nelson (Brenda); one sister, Margaret N. Chalflinch; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. Ms. Gillis was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Cox Nelson; father, Clarence Otis “Tom” Nelson; and two brothers, Clarence Eugene “Gene” Nelson, and Byron Nelson.
The family will be receiving friends and family on Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at TOWN & COUNTRY FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Friday, April 13th, at the Westside Baptist Church with Pastor Ray Mayfield officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chris Elliott Fund for Glioblastoma Brain Cancer Research or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
