Mary Gaile Edwards Wingard, of Jacksonville, FL, died peacefully in the presence of her beloved family on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. Gaile was the daughter of the late Mary Olive and George Belton Edwards of Greenville, SC. Gaile graduated from Greenville High School and the University of South Carolina. After teaching school for several years in Charleston, SC, she devoted her life to her family, friends, and the Jacksonville community. She volunteered for numerous organizations in Jacksonville, including the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, Hubbard House, St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School, and the Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Gaile loved hosting her family and friends at her vacation homes at Folly Beach, SC and Amelia Island, FL.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Joseph Theodore Wingard Jr.; her children, Joseph Theodore Wingard III and his wife Pam, Jonathan David Wingard and his wife Heather, and Katherine Wingard Sherman and her husband Nate; her grandsons, Matthew Alexander Wingard, Jonathan Michael Wingard, Jonathan Ramsay Wingard, Joseph Theodore Wingard, Nathaniel Alden Sherman, Jr., and an unborn granddaughter to be named Beatrice Gaile Sherman; her sister Jeanne Edwards Yarborough; and six nieces.
Thank you to her loving friends who have been wonderful support over the years and especially in recent weeks. Thank you to the amazing and caring staff in the ICU at St. Vincent’s Hospital. A celebration of Gaile’s life will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church 4129 Oxford Ave. 32210 on January 30 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage Giddens Funeral Home 729 S. Edgewood Ave.
