Mary was born on February 13, 1934, at her parents’ home in Jacksonville to the late William Andrew Ralph (W.A.R.) and Emma Belle (Thornton) James. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Milton Poag Sr.; brothers, Ralph, Jack, Frank, and Fred James; sisters Christine Harrell and Virginia West, along with other family members and close friends.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law John Milton (Jr) and Pam Poag of Fort Scott, Kansas, Frank Dennis and Becky Poag of Rosenberg, Texas, and James Richard and Pat Poag of Orange Lake, Florida: 8 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary grew up in Riverview and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1952 before travelling to New Jersey for training to work at Prudential Insurance. She worked as a data entry operator for various companies until she retired. Her father led her to Christ when she was 12, and she attended Riverview Baptist church until after she married. She was later a member of Sherwood Forest Baptist and Wingate Road Baptist church as the years passed. Even after she stopped attending services, she continued to pray for others. Mary will surely be missed.
A visitation for Mary will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
A celebration of her life will occur on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 3:00 PM, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. A committal service will immediately follow.
