Mary was born on February 16, 1928, to Allene Monroe and Wade Sessions Hastings in Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School where she was Salutatorian, Senior Class Secretary, and voted “Who’s Who for Most Service to School.”
Mary’s first job after high school was at RC Motor Lines where she met her beloved husband, John Howard Peavy. They were married in Jacksonville, Florida on October 22, 1949. In 1957, the couple moved to Columbia, South Carolina where they welcomed two daughters. When Mary wasn't busy raising her daughters, she shared her love through community outreach, her church, and serving as President of her Garden Club and Bridge Club. In 1969, the family moved back to Jacksonville and joined Southside Baptist Church. She continued her acts of service as a member of the Women's Missionary Union, Hospital Visitation Committee, and the many responsibilities as a Deacon's wife. Once her daughters were grown, she went back to work as a Claims Administrator for Florida Blue for 20 years.
Mary loved jigsaw puzzles, board games, and all types of card games, especially Uno. She was always patient and kind enough to teach the children at her many family reunions how to play the games and would go on to enjoy them with all. Mary also loved gardening, baking, and sharing recipes with her many friends and family. There are very fond memories of Mary taking the time to teach her granddaughters and grandnieces how to bake her favorite cookies, cobblers, and delicious desserts.
Mary leaves behind to cherish her memory, two daughters: Sharon Thompson (Gordon “Trip”) and Suzanne Fausett (Ottis “Trey”); three granddaughters: Stacey Bloebaum, Anna Bloebaum, and McKenzie Thompson Miller (Kellen); and two great-grandchildren: Emersyn and Elliott Miller; her sister, Sylvia Hastings Waller; sister-in-law, Nona Hastings; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and countless others who loved and admired Mary.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Howard Peavy, her siblings, Angus Hastings, Ramona Hastings Blackman, and Wade Hastings, Jane Beasley Blackman, and Marty Beasley Barnes.
