Mary Jane Zachman Hill Podein

Mary Jane Zachman Hill Podein, age 92, followed the light of our Lord on August 17, 2017 at St. Catherine LaBoure’ Manor, leaving behind her only child, Jane Hill Hiers and grandson, Jason A. Hiers (Nicole and son Nicholas). Mrs. Podein also has two step-grandchildren, A. Stacy Hiers Amerson (John and daughter, Hailee), and W. Jerry Hiers Jr. (Jennifer, son Owen, and daughter Lila). Mrs. Podein was preceded in death by her parents, K.G. and William Zachman; husbands, Charles Garrison Hill, Sr., and George Podein, Sr.; five older siblings, and son-in-law, W. Jerry Hiers, Sr.

Mary Jane was born in Evansville, IN graduating from Bosse High School in 1942 and Indiana School of Business in 1944. In July of 1947 she married Charles Hill and they moved to Jacksonville in the early 50’s. A lifelong Catholic, the Hills were founding members of San Jose Catholic Church. After twenty years as Office Manager for Mason Romaine III, MD, Mrs. Podein became highly involved in Catholic Charities and volunteerism at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in addition to many committees and woman’s organizations, community wide, as well as through the church. An avid bridge player, she would join a partner anytime and anyplace. If not in a bridge game, she enjoyed golf, as well as sunning and swimming with “the golden girls” at Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. Her smile and outgoing personality will be sorely missed.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church, 1606 Blanding Blvd., Middleburg, FL on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 with a reception and visitation at 11:30am in the Rooney Parrish Hall, followed by the funeral mass at 1:00pm. Procession and burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery on San Jose Blvd. in Jacksonville.
