Just as the sun began to rise over her beloved St. Johns River on May 31, 2022, Marcia Muir Good passed away peacefully with family at her side in the home she and her late husband built nearly three decades ago. She was 89.
Marcia was born on October 31, 1932, and grew up in Boston and Marlborough, MA. She graduated at the top of her high school class and went on to study at the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. She and a classmate then became traveling nurses, caring for patients in hospitals in Miami, Chicago and San Francisco.
It was in the Golden Gate City that she met her future husband. Arnold Good was a Missouri farm boy who had ventured west and taken a room in a boarding house in Pacific Heights. Marcia had also rented a room in the neighborhood, and while strolling to the mailbox one day spotted the young man with gentle eyes and a mischievous smile.
Soon, Marcia was making frequent trips to the mailbox — sometimes with an envelope that bore a stamp and address but no letter inside. She and Arnold met, courted and were married in September 1957.
When Arnold asked her what would make her happiest, she replied, “To make a family.” And they did just that, raising two children, Jeff and Jennifer, and welcoming their grandchildren into the family home. “Nana and Papa’s” was the scene of many joyful boat rides, pool parties, backyard football games, Thanksgiving suppers and hours spent laughing in the kitchen and fishing on the dock.
Arnold’s work as an executive with Kodak took the family to St. Louis, Chicago, Rochester, NY, Connecticut and, in the late 1970s, to Jacksonville. To have more time with her children, Marcia switched careers from nursing to real estate, becoming a successful agent with a passion for helping families to find new homes and sellers to get a fair price. She loved the work, and kept at it into her 80s.
Marcia’s gifts were her playful nature, uproarious laugh and gracious heart. She loved to dance to Frank Sinatra, to welcome friends and family to her home, to support her church and other charitable causes, and to put her poker skills to work on the Carnival cruises she loved taking with Arnold and her sister Paula. She was a devout Catholic, and when her health prevented her from traveling in person to Sunday Mass, she faithfully watched it on TV — and made clear that nobody was to interrupt her during that sacred time.
Marcia was predeceased by her husband, Arnold, in 2010. She is survived by her children, Jennifer of Jacksonville, and her son, Jeffrey and his wife Diana of Orr’s Island, ME; grandchildren Nicholas, Samantha, Ethan Jett and great-grandson Arlo of Jacksonville; grandchildren Alex, Amelia, her fiance Louie, and former daughter-in-law Laura Dintino of western Massachusetts; sister Paula Burton and niece Debbie and husband Tom Ready of Boston. All had lovely last visits with Marcia, mourn her loss and celebrate her reunion with Arnie in Heaven.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11665 Fort Caroline Rd., Jacksonville, FL. Following will be a committal service at 2:30 p.m. at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, and a reception to follow at the family home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Marcia’s honor to provide scholarships at the Greenwood School (greenwoodjax.org).
