Mack R. Murray, 88, went home to be with our Lord on Sunday, December 15th, 2013. He was born in Jacksonville in 1925. He attended Landon High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW2 and the Korean War. He graduated with an accounting degree from Florida State University in 1954. Most of his working career was with the Clay County School Board as the Assistant Superintendent of Finance. Soon after retiring from the Clay County School Board, he took a position with the City of Jacksonville.
He was a great athlete, particularly excelling in basketball and baseball. He also enjoyed playing golf. He loved coaching basketball and baseball. He coached many years with the Glynlea Association of the Florida Little Major League. He was a long time member of St. Nicholas Park Christian Church. In recent years, he enjoyed his affiliation with the Landon Alumni Association where he renewed and maintained friendships of over 60 years. He loved music and enjoyed playing the piano.
What his children and grandchildren will remember him best for his love and affection for he had for them. His greatest enjoyment was being with them; he taught them the most important lessons in life by the way his lived his life and by his impeccable character. His family was the most important to him, and he demonstrated that to them by the way he spoke to them and adored them every moment he was with them.
He was preceded in death by Louise, his loving wife of 65 years, his parents, Willie Warren Murray and Miriam Sellers Murray, sister Mary Appleby, brothers Willie Murray and Jimmy Murray. His is survived by a loving and adoring family: sister Marguerite Williamson (W.A.); daughters, Julie Farnell and Mary Soud; sons, Skip Murray (Betty Jo), Lynn Murray, and Marty Murray (Becky); grandchildren, Andy Farnell, Amy Lamy, John Murray, Stephen Murray, Scott Murray, Chad Murray, Gavin Murray, Elizabeth Soud, Mack Murray, Mickey Murray, and Erin Soud. He is survived by seven great grandchildren.
He is grateful for his friends at Wyndham Lakes and for the compassionate care he received at River Garden Hebrew Home and Community Hospice Hadlow Center. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage-Gidden’s Hendricks Chapel 4115 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL. 32207 (904) 346-3808. Family will receive friends for visitation at Hendricks Chapel Saturday, December 28, 2013 from 12-2pm. Mr. Murray’s funeral service will begin at 2:00pm following the visitation. Interment will follow immediately after at Oaklawn Cemetery 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Fl. 32207. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Mack’s name to Community Hospice at the Hadlow Center.
