Lowell Mason Salter, Jr. 83 of Jacksonville, FL passed away in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL on May 25, 2021. He was born on April 4, 1938 in Shreveport, LA to Lowell Mason Salter, Sr. and Thyra J. Mabry Salter. He grew up in Natchitoches, LA. Lowell graduated from Southern Methodist University and earned his PhD from Eastern Kentucky University. He served in the Navy as a supply officer and was a founding professor at the University of North Florida. He was instrumental in the creation of the Small Business Development Center and spent his tenure as a professor at UNF, helping others be successful in their small business. The SBDC still flourishes today; Dr. Salter took immense pleasure in seeing businesses succeed and pass on their gift of success to others. Lowell established two endowments at UNF to aid in the success of future generations, the Lowell M. Salter Graduate Fellowship in Entrepreneurial Studies and the Betty Bogue Ramsey Salter Physical Therapy Endowed Graduate Fellowship.
Lowell enjoyed traveling within the states and abroad and loved spending time with his four grandchildren. He always had candy in his shirt pocket and would request a performance from his grandchildren to “Preacher and the Bear”.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura McMullen (Daniel) and their children Ashley (23) and Mason (20) and his son, Eric Salter (Madelen) and their children Allison (15) and Ramsey (9). He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Jean Fenn (Phil) and their children Dale and Debbie and brother, Stanley Salter (Marion) and their children Lindsey and Robert. Lowell is preceded in death by Mason Salter, Thyra Salter, Betty Salter and Nancy Salter.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hardage-Giddens Chapel Hills Funeral Home (850 St. Johns Bluff Rd. Jacksonville, FL) at 2:00pm June 12th. The Salter family will receive family and friends following the service. His ashes will be spread off the coast of St. Augustine, FL where he spent time with his family.
