Lesley loved fishing and made beautiful fishing nets as well. In 1942, at the age of 16, he went on to work as a diesel mechanic for Gibbs/Jacksonville Shipyard until he retired in 1989 at the age of 63 and a half. He always said that he would still be there today if Jacksonville Shipyard hadn’t gone out of business!
Lesley was drafted by the US Navy from August 31, 1945 to July 12, 1946. He served during World War II and was honorably discharged as a proud World War II veteran.
On July 13, 1946 he enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves and transferred from the reserves to the United States Marine Corps from January 22, 1952 until January 21, 1954. He was discharged after having rheumatic fever, leading him to request an honorable discharge in hopes of finding future employment.
He served in the United States Navy Reserve and the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War for a total of 6 years and is a Korean War Veteran.
Lesley is predeceased by his wife; Francis Owens, three sons; Robert, Frank, and Richard Owens, and one stepson; Jimmy Lane.
He is survived by his daughters; Judy Necaise and Brenda Halstead, sister; Betty Shirley, multiple step children and multiple grandchildren.
