Katherine T. Borders

Kathy was born on October 29, 1955, in Emory Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia; the youngest child of the late Arnold W. and Margaret McRee Thompson. Kathy grew up in Atlanta, where she and her sisters, Linda and Elaine, and her brother, Kenny, were active members of Woodland Hills Baptist Church. Following her graduation from Walker High School in Atlanta, Kathy began working for the U.S. Department of Labor. Here, she met the love of her life, James Borders, and they were married on January 17, 1987, in Atlanta. Their first home together was in Columbia, South Carolina, followed by a move in 1991 to Jacksonville. Her son Will attended Florida State University and Kathy became an avid FSU Football and Basketball fan. Kathy’s love for her two “boys” was boundless, and she was ecstatic when Will and Katie presented her with a grandson, Liam, last year. Her Baptist faith also continued to play an essential role in her life and she was a member of Fort Caroline Baptist Church for well over twenty years. Her friend and Church Pastor, Ricky Powell, gave her and her family strong spiritual support and comfort during her final illness.

Kathy Borders is survived by her husband of 35 years, James D. Borders, her sons William S. Borders II and Matthew J. Borders; daughter-in-law Katie Andres Borders ; grandson William S. “Liam” Borders III; brother Kenny A. Thompson (Kathy); sisters Linda McCollum (Bob) and Elaine Waters (Sid); brothers-in-law William S. Borders Jr., Richard E. Borders (Mary) and Barry Peterman (Janie); and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Remembrance of Life will be held in the Fort Caroline Baptist Church, 11428 McCormick Road, Jacksonville, on March 12 at 11:00 AM. All of Kathy’s friends and family are welcome to attend. Please wear casual and colorful clothing in her honor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org) or the Fort Caroline Baptist Church.
