May 19, 1943 – April 8, 2025
Joseph “Joe” Andrew Spivey Sr., lovingly known by many as “Drew,” passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025, in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 81. A one-of-a-kind man with a big heart, quick wit, and a love for life’s simplest treasures, Joe left an unforgettable mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Born on May 19, 1943, in Jacksonville, Joe entered the world with a spirit of adventure and an unmatched sense of humor. At just 18, he joined the U.S. Army and served proudly as a Paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He always joked that he was “one of the crazy ones willing to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.”
After his military service, Joe earned his Bachelor’s degree from Jones College—becoming the first in his family to not only attend college, but graduate. He then went on to dedicate over 35 years of his life to the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA), where he was known for his commitment, integrity, and expertise. He also gave back to his community as a longtime baseball coach with the Mandarin Athletic Association.
Joe’s passions were many, but none greater than his love for “rummaging”. Garage sales were his personal Disney World, and few could match his knowledge—and collection—of antiques. From cookie jars to Griswold frying pans, he was a collector through and through. In his younger days, Joe enjoyed tennis (possibly for the women, Judy would joke) and he loved playing golf, delighting in retelling stories of near hole-in-ones.
Joe was a lifelong and dedicated Florida Gators fan—orange and blue ran deep in his veins. He was a longtime season ticket holder for Gators football and cherished attending games with his family, creating memories that spanned generations. One of his proudest fan moments was attending two National Championship games in football, which he considered a true privilege. Fittingly, and perhaps poetically, Joe watched the Gators win the NCAA basketball championship on his final day—a comeback victory that brought him joy and one last cheer for the team he loved.
More than anything, Joe loved his family. He was married to the love of his life, Judy Spivey, for nearly 62 years—a bond he cherished deeply and proudly called his greatest accomplishment. Together, they built a beautiful life full of love, laughter, and defined by strength and resilience.
He is survived by his devoted wife Judy; his sons Joe Jr. (Amanda), Josh (Lauren), and Scott; his grandchildren Morgan (James), Cody, Milan, and Cason; and many close family members including Cathy, Joel, Payge, Lindsay, Joe Man, Obrad, Joe & Janice Spires, his nephew Michael and his son Cam. Most importantly, he is survived by his favorite dog Buddy, or “buddy boy” as he called him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved children Steven, Jason, and Jody; his sister Ann, his brother-in-law Gene, Little Gene; and his dear niece Carmen.
Joe’s sharp memory, playful humor, and big personality stayed with him until his final day. His stories, strength, and spirit will be remembered always.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Joe. For details, please contact his son Joe Spivey at 904-770-6240.
