He was born in Memphis,TN on October 10th, 1928 to William Leigh Meux and Doris Davis Meux. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Freitag Meux; children, Joseph “Clay” Davis Meux Jr (Elizabeth) and John Edward Meux; grandchildren, Olivia and Davis; brother-in-law, John William “Bill” Freitag (Donna); nieces, Bette “Lou” Meux Solomon (William), Doris Ann “Dee” Meux, Christina Freitag Martin (Patrick); and great niece, Ella Greer Martin.
After graduating from Rhodes College, he was drafted by the army into the Korean War where he
worked his way through the enlisted ranks to Officer Candidate School. After his active-duty service, he
remained in the Army reserve for over 30 years before retiring as a Colonel. He then attended
Vanderbilt Law School and practiced law in Memphis where he was a partner at Evans, Petrie, and Cobb
PA., before receiving the call to ministry. He attended Louisville Theological Seminary and received his
Masters in Divinity and then became the minister at Central Presbyterian Church in Henderson, KY,
where he met his wife. He continued his education at Vanderbilt Divinity School and obtained his
Masters in Theology. He and Elizabeth married in 1966 before moving to Richmond, VA where he
received his Doctorate at Union Theological Seminary.
In 1968, Joe and Elizabeth moved to Jacksonville to begin his ministry as pastor at Mandarin
Presbyterian Church (PCUSA). He served at Mandarin Presbyterian for 26 years before retiring from the
ministry. Joe spent his retirement years volunteering as a Pro Bono attorney at Jacksonville Area Legal
Aid and serving the Jacksonville community in numerous organizations including the Mandarin Rotary
Club, Riverside Presbyterian Church as a Sunday school teacher, the State of Florida area coordinator for
SHINE, a member and leader of various Boards including ElderSource and City of Jacksonville Council of
Elder Affairs where he was an at-large member until his death. He was especially proud of his service to
the Jacksonville Area Legal Aid at the Mary Singleton Senior Center.
A memorial service will be held at Riverside Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 29th at 10:00
am with a reception to follow in Bittinger Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his
