John (Johnny) was born in Hemingway, South Carolina on August 27, 1946 to parents Nelson R. & Myrtis Barnhill, Sr. He proudly served for 22 years with the US Navy as a flight engineer and maintenance crew for the P-3 Orion aircraft and retired as a Maintenance Chief. After his retirement Johnny continued to work as flight engineer with various cargo flight services until 2007. For the past 10 years Johnny worked at Flightstar Aircraft Services as a Quality Control Supervisor. Johnny proudly attended Westside Christian Church (WCC) and one of his greatest joys was to serve in the church using his cooking/barbecuing talents cooking for the various pig roasts held at WCC. He loved his family and church family dearly and was always willing to help or serve anyone in need.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Lawrence Denny Barnhill and Nelson R. Barnhill, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty L. Barnhill (Langley) and his children Angie Mitchell, Becky McCalip (Steve), and Amy Winstead (Jon) all of Jacksonville; his sister Myrlee Powers of Camden, SC, brother Rudolph Barnhill (Dorothy) of Pensacola, his brother Clyde Barnhill (Janie) of Winter Haven, 7 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Westside Christian Church.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Hardage-Giddens Riverside Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 7, 2019 in Westside Christian Church 10123 Normandy Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32221. Followed by a committal service in Jacksonville National Cemetery 4083 Lannie Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32218.
