Joan S. Matthews, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024, at the age of 88 in Ascension St. Vincent’s Hospital, in the hospice unit. Born on September 22, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Joan lived a life rich in love and laughter. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Joan was known for her warm spirit and kind heart. She dedicated her life to nurturing her family and cultivating deep friendships. As a devoted mother, she raised two children, instilling in them the values of compassion, resilience, and integrity. Her love extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her indescribable joy and pride. Joan filled her home with warmth, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
Professionally, Joan pursued a career at S. C. Henderson, a commercial construction company, demonstrating her incredible work ethic and determination. She worked there for 27 years, starting as a secretary, then transitioning to project coordinator. Many remember her as an inspiring figure, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer guidance.
In her free time, Joan enjoyed dancing and traveling with her husband, Hugh, tending to her plants and flowers, and watching Jeopardy. She loved doing crossword puzzles and rarely ran across one she could not finish.
Joan is survived by sons, Harry A Downs II and Frederick Charles (Chuck) Downs; her grandchildren, Lydia C Reece and Kyle (Ti) Downs; her great-grandchildren: Freida K Reece, Bear A Reece, Isabella A Downs; her brother, Gary C Sooy; and many dear friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hugh E Matthews.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Ascension St. Vincent's Hospital Hospice for their compassionate care and support during Joan's final days.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on December 12th at 2:30 at Hardage-Giddens, Riverside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, Florida 32205. Family and friends are invited to gather to share memories, honor her legacy, and support one another during this difficult time.
Joan will forever be remembered for her unwavering love, selflessness, and the light she brought into the lives of everyone she encountered. May she rest in peace.
