J.J. Currie (Jonathan), age 60, a native resident of Jacksonville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 30, 2015 after a brief illness and hospitalization. J.J.’s life was filled with love of family and his career as a media sales account executive. He was born in Jacksonville on July 6, 1955 and graduated from Englewood High School in 1973 and Florida Southern College with a BA degree in 1978. He worked for 35 years as a leading TV sales executive most recently with WFOX and previously with WJXT. He got his start in media sales at Clay Today before moving briefly to radio and then beginning his extended career in television advertising sales. He was well known by everyone in his hometown. J.J. volunteered his spare time with many local organizations but his favorite was Builders Care.
He is survived by 3 children, Josh, Chris and Amee; brothers, Michael (Jan), Brian (Bonnie), and Susan Currie. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and other extended family members including cousins, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and business associates. His wife and soul mate of 32 years, Roxanne, predeceased him in 2013.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at eleven o’ clock in the morning on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 6133 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida 32217. The family requests that those attending the service wear cheerful and colorful clothing.
Family will receive friends on Monday, January 4, 2016 from five until seven o’ clock in the evening at Hardage-Giddens, The Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Builders Care.
