Jean Ray Murray died on March 13th after a brief illness. She was born on May 30, 1917, in Huntington, West Virginia, to Flavia Lathrop and Edgar Barrett Ray. After graduating from North Avenue Presbyterian School in Atlanta, GA, and Randolph – Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, she lived with her parents in St. Louis, MO, where she met and married Harry Lawrason Murray, Jr., in 1940. Mrs. Murray moved to Jacksonville, Florida, with Col. Murray in 1969 upon his retirement from the U.S. Army. Of the unstinting support she gave to her husband’s 30 year career, Mrs. Murray was most proud of their service in Bremerhaven, Germany, from 1946-1947 and with the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia, from 1960-1962. Mrs. Murray was an active member of the Altar Guild of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and an avid tennis player into her 80’s. In her spare time, she liked to garden, read and argue politics with her son and daughter. Mrs. Murray is predeceased by Col. Murray in 2002 and survived by her son, Harry Lawrason Murray, III, her daughter, Cornelia Lathrop Murray, and her grandson, Paul Christopher Murray. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 19, at 1:00pm at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32210.
