James Edward (Jimmy) Thompson, age 90, died Sunday, June 12, 2016 surrounded by family in Flagler Hospital. Raised in West Virginia, The 10th child of a tight knit coal mining family, he attended Duke University and Law School, graduating number one in his class on the GI Bill after serving in the Army Air Corps in WWII. He practiced with talent and panache as a trial attorney in Tampa, Florida with the firm of Fowler White for 5 decades before retiring to a quiet spot on the St John's River with his lovely wife, Diana NesSmith.
He is survived by his brother, Mote (94); his wife, Diana; his 4 sons, Ray (Eddie), Jim (Mote), Billy, and Greg; and his 2 daughters, Erin and Jeanette.
There will be a gathering Friday, June 17th from 5:00 to 8:00pm at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida. Interment will be Saturday, June 18 at 12:00pm in Jacksonville at Oaklawn Cemetery. Services celebrating his life will be held at The Village Church at World Golf Village on Saturday, June 18 at 2:30 PM, and in Tampa at the University Club on Saturday, June 25 from 2:30 to 6:30pm.
