James is survived by his wife Judy of 32 years; daughter, Carin Creel; sons, Brian (Janine) Rutherford, Lorin (Amy) Rutherford, Joseph (Springdove) Rutherford, and Ross (Angie) Rutherford; stepdaughters, Lora Wood, and Cheryl Bennett; stepson, Jack Wright; brothers, John (Patricia) Rutherford, Gene (Judy) Rutherford, Hubert (Keri) Rutherford; sister, Ruby (Jason) Hayes; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
James was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend to everyone. To say that James loved motorcycles is an understatement. Many thought he was born with oil in his veins. He was particularly fond of Hondas and has ridden one from the time he built his first one at about 14 years old. He was a great mechanic and racer, having raced at many top venues such as Road Atlanta, and Daytona. He was a lifetime AMA member and was always happiest riding or watching others ride.
James was a US Navy Veteran, serving in the Reserves during the Vietnam War. He was always very humble about his service. He retired from two local companies, having been a store manager at Winn- Dixie for 27 years and a meat cutter at Publix for over 19 years. He also worked for a time as an assembler for Kawasaki. James or Jim as most called him, kept lifelong friends and enjoyed reminiscing with his old classmates and work colleagues at their regular meetings. He was also a proud member of the Goldwingers and enjoyed many rides and events with them throughout the years.
A visitation for James will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32205. The funeral service will occur Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at 12:00 pm at the Funeral Home with burial to follow at Riverside Memorial Park.
