James Robert (Bob) Garner, Sr. was received into the arms of Jesus on Sunday December 17, 2017. He was surrounded by his family where he died at home while under hospice care. Bob was born November 10, 1934 to parents Willie Lee and James G. Garner in Atlanta, GA.
He is survived by his wife, Robin Garner of 63 years; daughter, Robin Johnson and husband Larry Johnson; and his son, James R. (Bob) Garner, Jr and wife, Donna Garner; as well as 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Despite being in a severe auto accident at 26 years of age he went on to a successful career as a pharmaceutical representative. He had numerous surgeries due to the accident and frequently needed to use crutches, a cane, or a wheelchair while working due to the injuries he suffered. Bob was known by all for never meeting a stranger and loving all people and sharing the love of Christ to all. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church for 58 years where he served as a Deacon including chairman of the Deacons, taught Sunday School into his 80’s, and sang in the choir. After retirement while using an electric wheelchair he passed the chaplaincy exam and was a volunteer Chaplain at Baptist DT or over 25 years. He was a Chaplain at the Jax Port authority where he worked with foreign sailors. He also was involved with KAIROS where he ministered to men in prison. He was a member of the Civitan Club of South Jax for 23 years also serving as their Chaplain and was recently honored as Chaplain Emeritus for the Club.
His celebration service will be Wednesday, December 27 at 11am at Southside Baptist Church, 1435 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32207 officiated by Dr. Gary Lee Webber. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Southside Baptist Church and or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
