James Fredric Conrad (79), (affectionately known as Jim, Jimbo, Pops, Dad, Papa and UJ) passed away in the wee hours of the morning on Monday, February 1, 2021 from Covid-19. Jim was diagnosed with cancer in April, 2020 and fought a courageous battle defeating small cell and non-small cell lung cancer. He underwent 36 radiation treatments and four cycles of chemo and endured the side effects admirably and never complained, only to have his life taken by this vicious disease in just over 2 weeks.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio to George L. and Helen M. Conrad, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Marie Conrad, and his brother, George L. Conrad, III. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janie (Glisson) Conrad, his sons, Michael Conrad and Jimmy Conrad (Christina), grandchildren, Autumn Marie Roudebush (Jon) Hunter Conrad and Kenny Miller, grandchildren, great-grandchild, Delsin Noah Roudebush, sister, Carol Jean “Susie” Drescher (Hans), brother, Robert Conrad (Susan), numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom Jim loved dearly.
Jim served in the US Navy and was retired from the retail business serving as the Manager of stores for several major retailers and then as District Manager for a large convenience store chain.
Jim enjoyed fishing, especially with his wife and nephews. He also loved golfing with his nephews and was an enthusiastic fan of the Florida Gators, Jacksonville Jaguars, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and the Jacksonville Sharks. He also loved classic cars snd enjoyed NASCAR. His absolute favorite was drag racing, and especially the Gator Nationals, which he attended with his sons and nephews. He loved the smell of nitromethane and burning rubber.
Funeral arrangements and cremation will be handled by Hardage-Giddens, Dignity Memorial and his remains will be interred in the National Cemetery. Information concerning Interment will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
A Memorial Service celebrating Jim’s life will be held at a later date so that all his family and friends from afar can help us celebrate his life. This again will be dictated by Covid protocols and restrictions.
