After serving his country in World War II with the Army, he became a barber and owned and operated The Barber Shop in Westside Jacksonville for 52 years. He was the local barber, cutting hair and flat-tops for the Paxon/Woodstock area.
He was a member of First Coast Baptist Church (formally known as Jacksonville Baptist Temple).
James was very close with his family and stayed very busy attending reunions and get togethers. He lived a very independent life with his wife Retha until the last week of his life.
He is predeceased in death by his parents, Julius Bethel Bryant and Sarah Etta Corson Bryant, son Donald Ray Bryant (Judi) (Died January 22, 2015), granddaughter Lydia Ann Bryant, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
He leaves behind his wife of 74 years, Retha V. Bryant, sons Kenneth Clyde Bryant (Carol), and James Edward “Spunk” Bryant, daughter Judy Faye Bryant Gneisig (Fred). He also leaves behind 8 grandchildren: James “Jim” Everett Bryant (Tracy), Darren Ray Bryant, Thomas “Tommy” Fred Gneisig (Michelle), Kimberly Lynn Gneisig Long (Darrell), Wendy Jo Bryant Wood (Shane), Jason Edward Bryant, Joy Anna Bryant-Baucum (Stacy), Kenneth “Kenny” Cason Bryant (Sharon), 16 Great Grandchildren: Michael James Bryant (Lindsay), Courtney Ann Bryant, Ashleigh Nikole Bryant Greco (Jeremiah), Colton Jay Bryant, Hunter Thomas Gneisig, Shelby Leigh Gneisig, Rachael Marie Long, Noah James Chehata, Shannon Ray Baucum, Joshua “JD” Darren Bryant, Meghan Lynn Bryant, Lydia Marie Bryant, Cason Everett Bryant, and 1 Great Great Grandchild: Kenneth Aiden Greco.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home 729 S Edgewood Ave, Jax. Fl 32205, where a visitation service will be held Friday January 30, 2015 from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday January 31, 10 am at First Coast Baptist Church 7587 Blanding Blvd. Jax. Fl 32244 to be followed by interment at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd, Jax. Fl 32210.
