James "Jim/Jimmy" O. Biggers, Jr., 75, born August 30, 1941, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017, in Jacksonville, Florida after a long fight with advanced prostate cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, James O. Sr. and Myrtle Capps Biggers; sister, Judi Biggers Williamson; George and Alice Smith; and R. Thomas and Claudie Cooke. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Alyce Jo “Jo”; son, John (Tina) Biggers; grandsons, Bradley and Trevor “TJ” Biggers, Jim Williamson, Jan Cooke, Wesley Smith, and Ashley Biggers. There are several nieces, nephews, and cousins as well.
He served in active duty for the US Army in the Panama Canal zone from 1965-1967. He is a Class of '59 graduate from Englewood High School, Jacksonville. He attended college at Florida Community College of Jacksonville and received his Engineering degree. He began working at the age of 17 at Channel 4-WJXT, where he worked his way up from pushing cameras around the studio to Chief Engineer, retiring in 2004 after 45 years of service. He was a long time member of San Jose Baptist Church where he served in several different capacities. He was active in the North Florida Boy Scout Council, River Bend district, starting as a scout himself then volunteering with various troops as his son and grandson made their journey with the Scouts. He also volunteered at the district scouting office. He earned his Wood Badge beads and received the Silver Beaver Award for his volunteer efforts and served in many leadership capacities throughout his years. He received the James E. West Fellowship award for his involvement and support of the scouts, both locally and district wide.
Some of his interests and hobbies include photography, NASCAR, HAM radio, fishing, boating, bicycling, and especially watching his grandsons play baseball.
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, April 15, 2017 at San Jose Baptist Church, 6140 San Jose Boulevard, with Pastor Mike Reed attending. The family will receive visitors from 12:30-2 at the church, followed by the service, interment at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the North Florida Council-BSA, 521 S. Edgewood Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32205 or San Jose Baptist Church for youth camp and missions.
