Jack Walter Waggoner was born October 8th, 1933 in Jacksonville, Florida. He graduated in 1949 from Landon High School. At the time, he was working part-time at J.C Penney’s in downtown Jacksonville and attending school part-time; helping out his widowed mother and two siblings at home, financially. He had a younger sister, Joanne, and a younger brother, Jay.
Jack served in the U.S Army from 1953 – 1955 (active) and was discharged in 1961.
He attended the University of Florida for three years, studying architecture. He went to work at Reynolds Smith & Hills, an architectural firm, as an architectural draftsman. Later working for Drake & Patillo Architects, again, as an architectural draftsman. Because this firm designed many churches, Jack built models of the churches to be displayed in the church lobbies. He did some traveling for this firm, inspecting the buildings in other cities, making sure the builders were staying true to the specifications on the designs.
His two passions were Railroading and Photography. He was a charter member of the Gateway Model Railroad Club, which merged with the Jacksonville Terminal Railroad Museum. The museum is building a model of Jacksonville railroading from 1939 to 1974; Ranging from steam, to diesel, to streamline. Jack built a model of the Warrington Street Round-House to scale.
Jack is survived by three nieces, Jaki Waggoner, living in Jacksonville, Florida, Charline Dees, and Brenda Starkey, and one nephew, Chuck Starkey, living in Kettle Falls Washington, and several grand nieces and nephews, and by his sister-in-law, Betty Dubovsky.
Graveside services will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd, on Thursday, October 6th 2022, at 1:00pm. Reception to follow in the offices at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Florida Disaster fund.
