Henry Franklin Stevens Jr. reported to his Superior Officer for his final tour of duty October 24, 2021 at Baptist South Hospital. Henry, age 86, was born in Adrian, Georgia but lived most of his life in Jacksonville, Florida.
Henry graduated from Landon High School and joined the army. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. The army awarded him many medals, including the bronze star, two meritorious service medals, and the esteemed Legion of Merit. After twenty-six years, he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While working for the army, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Later, he embarked on a second career with the Institute of Police Technology and Management training police officers in various skills including interviews and interrogations.
Personally, Henry loved his God and his family. The majority of his interests focused on those two spheres. In his church, Henry served as a layreader, Sunday school teacher, VBS leader, and many other charitable causes. Known as the “Picker Upper,” he carried his children, grandchildren and, even, nieces and nephews to and from after-school activities. He loved nothing more than having his whole clan gathered at the house for his homemade chili during football season.
Most of all, Henry was a good man--A loving husband to wife Jean for sixty-five years, a loving father to his four children, a loving grandfather to his sixteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a loyal friend to countless others.
Henry was predeceased by his parents, sister, and son. He is survived by his sister, wife, and three children.
Thank you to the wonderful staff of the Baptist South ICU for their kindness and gentle care during his last days. Also, thank you to his beloved church small group for their continued love and support during the last few years.
