Hardy B. Shelfer, 90, of Jacksonville, Florida, went to be with the Lord on December 23, 2016. He was the son of the late Lewis and Lucy Barwick and Adrian L. and Corene (Shepard) Shelfer. Hardy, as known by all, was a man of deep faith in God, personal strength, and great integrity. He served his country during World War II by enlisting at the age of 17 in the Navy and later the Army during the Korean conflict. He followed his father’s footsteps as a career railroad man retiring after 42 years of service. As a faithful church member, he served as a deacon at East Hill Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Florida. As a man who loved the outdoors, he instilled this respect and love of nature to his children. He loved camping, fishing, and working on the family property.
Hardy took pride as a Mason and loved helping others. Often those acts of kindness were privately bestowed, only known to those involved. He was a man of kindness, loyalty, and devotion and was always ready for a good laugh or joke. He was very loved and though his physical presence has ceased, his spirit will live on in those who love him and whose lives he touched. Rest in Peace Dear Soul, Rest in Peace.
Hardy is predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Marcile; sons Randall and Larry Shelfer; and a sister, Carolyn V. Lehman. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Shelfer; granddaughter, Jennifer Nguy; and sisters Vernell Patton and Carolyn McLarty. His loving extended family includes sisters-in-law Wilma Whittemore, Pauline Scott, Betty Zeorlin, their families, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 31, 2016 at ten o’clock in the morning at Town and Country Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.
