As a young man Grady, attended Andrew Jacksonville High School and Massey Business College, afterward he joined the Airforce and served honorably during the Korean War. Grady took great pride in supporting his community through leading local Boy Scout and Eagle Scout troops; he was also the President of Highlands Little League Baseball and the District Administrator of Little League Baseball. Grady was also a Captain in the Jacksonville Police Reserve. He was employed by Eastern Airline and went to work for the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller. Grady spent time in Atlanta, GA as Deputy Chief of Operations, and was later promoted to Chief of Miami and Jacksonville Centers. During his career with the FAA, Grady received the Facility of the Year Award three times. He was also part of the first successful case against the tobacco industry. Following Grady’s retirement, Millie and he moved from Orange Park, FL where they had resided for many years to Saint Johns in 2003. In his free time, Grady loved playing golf, supporting the Florida Gators and spending time with his family.
Grady is predeceased by his parents; brother, James V. Carter, Jr; and sister, Alma C. Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Millie Carter; sons, Grady L. (Betty) Carter, Robert E. (Pam) Carter; daughter, Patricia C. (Gary) McCutcheon; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 24, 2018 in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin where the Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 25, 2018. A Graveside Service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, 4535 Main St N, Jacksonville, FL 32206.
