Georgia Mae (Bingham) Hammons was born on August 29, 1934 in Flat Lick, (Binghamtown), (Knox County), Kentucky. Georgia was a vibrant child and teen and loved life and the Lord. She married James R. Hammons of Baughman, (Turkey Creek), (Knox County), Kentucky and had four daughters, Debra (Steve) Rider, Diana (Martin) Johnson, Theresa (Todd) Wilmot and Frances (Greg) Payne. She loved her seven grandchildren, Amanda (Jacob/Jake) Patow, Perri Rider, David Wilmot, Jason Wilmot (Tori), Nicholas Wilmot (Brittany), Heather Johnson (Jeff) Steinberg and Sarah Johnson (Jon Reshard), and great grandchildren, Parker, Korbin, Isla Mae Patow, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Georgia was preceded in death by her husband James R. Hammons, daughter Frances M. Payne, parents, Effie (Slusher) and Parker Bingham, sister Amanda Bingham (Obe) Jackson, brother William (Nelson /Nels)(Juanita Mills) Bingham, of Flat Lick, Kentucky.
Georgia was a Navy wife, and spent many of her early married years raising her children while her husband was at sea. She had her struggles as many Navy wives did. She lived most of her life in Jacksonville, Florida and was a homemaker. Later in life she worked at Tuesday Morning Department store, she was a member of Arlington United Methodist Church, and later a member at Kernan Baptist Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for over 20 years, a member of the Red Hat Society and the Sunshine Girls. Georgia was a social butterfly who loved and was loved by everyone she met. She loved being with family. She enjoyed yard sales, thrift stores and eating out. Her favorite restaurants were Safe Harbor, European Street, and Osteen’s in St. Augustine. After a busy day of thrifting, upon arrival at one of her favorite dining spots, she would often say, “I have traveled far and I am so thirsty, do you have raspberry tea?” This would probably be one of the first things she would ask for in Heaven.
She moved to Athens, Georgia in 2016 to live with her daughter Theresa and family after an illness that rendered her needing 24/7 care. She lived life to her fullest capability in spite of her struggles with dementia. The Lord was good to fulfill her life with companionship and love again, even in her last years with family by her side to help her through the rough days. .Many thanks to Traditions Hospice of Bogart Georgia and The Landing at Bogart Memory Care for taking such special care of her in her final days. Until we meet again sweet Mother.
A graveside service for Georgia will be held Friday, March 22, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.
