George Cameron Wheeler (‘Pokey’), age 92, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1924 in Tampa, Florida to Lester and Margaret Wheeler. He was the youngest of 3 brothers, Walt and Frank. He was a resident of Jacksonville since the 1920’s and a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents and brothers, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Julietta (Julie) Dupere Wheeler. He is survived by his son, Robert Cameron Wheeler; his daughter, Janice Wheeler English (John); 4 grandsons, Jason (Becky) and Justin (Jennifer) English, Cameron (Ashu) and Nathan Wheeler; 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He graduated from Landon High School in 1942 and joined the US Navy, serving as a combat veteran as a 2nd Class Gunners Mate on PT Boats in the South Pacific for two years. He returned to the University of Florida, joined Sigma Chi Fraternity and graduated in 1949. Most of his business career was spent with Virginia Paper Company. He was active with the Masons and Shriners (Arlington ‘76’ers) and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, achieving the rank of Commander. He was an avid boater and fisherman among many diverse interests including being a long-time Gators fan.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 13, 2017 in the Chapel of Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida with Rev. Arlindall Burks, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in George’s name to the Shriners Hospital for Children, International Headquarters 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, Fl. 33807.
